Little Scientist and the Butterflies

My daughter’s first introduction to science observation is the Butterfly Garden by Insect Lore. My Kindergarten scientist will have firsthand experience observing and studying the lifecycle of a butterfly in her own lab…her home. I found the kit at my local educational store. The kit comes with a coupon to redeem at Insectlore.com for your caterpillars. The caterpillars were sent to me within a week. All five are currently sitting on my mantle in a small plastic container in which they arrived. So far my daughter has observed the growth of the caterpillar. We check their progress daily. Computer use and Rules

One big advantage that homeschoolers of today have is the computer. The many ways the computer can be used to homeschool are endless. You don’t need a computer to homeschool, but the use of one can make life so much easier. While I allow my child to play on the computer by himself whenever he wants, there are some guidelines that he must follow in order to continue to be allowed to play on the computer. When he wants to play on the internet though, that’s a whole new set of rules. The use of a computer to homeschool is … Continue reading

Can Animal Planet Scare Your Pet?

Are you the kind of pet parent who leaves Animal Planet on when you’re away from home? I have a lot of pet parent friends who do this. It makes sense. Animal Planet…animals are featured…pets should like this. Right? But what if it scares them? A little while back I watched Bailey, a neighbor’s dog, for a day. It wasn’t an overnight thing; all I had to do was stop over for a couple of pee-break visits and such. So she wouldn’t get too lonely in the interim, her mom left Animal Planet on for her. During my last visit … Continue reading

Homeschooling while pregnant

Recently, I posted about meeting, in general, the challenge of teaching various ages. I mentioned that so much comes down to me and to my attitude. When I can remain calm, patient, and flexible, our days are smoother and happier. But, exactly how does one go about achieving that patience and calm? Some days, such as the one I described (in which my four-year-old was dying for glitter) we just wing it and find a middle ground that works for everyone. It’s easier now than it was just a couple of years ago. (Four-year-olds, though mercurial, are much more reasonable … Continue reading

Homeschooling and Animal Planet

We have a ‘TV off until 4 PM’ policy in our homeschool. There is one exception though. I allow the kids to watch Animal Planet almost whenever they please. (So I guess it is an ‘educational TV only before 4 PM’ policy). They mostly watch Animal Planet in the early afternoons and they also watch it a lot in the summer when I lighten their workloads. Animal Planet is an awesome channel and teaches my kids about so much. Many of the topics,I know nothing about. Here are some of the things they have learned. 1. How a baby is … Continue reading

Student Inventors Awards

During the 16th annual ExploraVision awards, students from grades kindergarten through twelfth grade had the opportunity to show their talent, make their dreams come true, and win some cash. The students at the National Press Club are all inventors. The students bring their ideas and inventions for the judges to examine.
